Trimming

“Why are you so late?” she asks,
holding up a pair of bloody shears.
“What have you been trimming?”
I ask in horror, looking around the garden
which darkens by the moment as the
sun slips from view, as if ashamed.
She smiles and licks the shears.
“Those who need trimming,” she answers.
